SIG: Payments in Hospitality

At June’s Payment Security & Risk Management SIG, Rajesh Vohra of Sarova Hotels shared his experiences after suffering three payment data breaches in just a matter of months. Rajesh’s presentation highlighted the particular challenges faced by hotels in relation to the distributed nature of booking, where they might not have a direct relationship with the organisation taking the card payment details, but where they are still identified as the common point of purchase and thus are liable for the data breach.

It was apparent from Rajesh’s presentation that in breaches such as those suffered by Sarova, the hotels are stuck between a rock and a hard place. With no control over the data collection point, but overall responsibility for that data, they are at a loss as to how they can move forward to ensure they meet the necessary payment security standards. It was also apparent that there’s a general lack of real understanding of the complexity of the distributed booking notice and so, as we seek to bring the industry together to identify solutions to these problems, we’re delighted to that Alex Fitzpatrick, Vice President of Global Travel Payment Solutions at Travelport has offered to guide us through the complexity.

The thorny issue of pre-authorisation in hospitality never seems to go away and the apparent failure of the payments industry to respond to these issues has led players in the hotel industry to seek to implement their own solution. Steve Waldron, Finance Director at Grange Hotels, who has trialled the new model in some of his hotels, will share with us a brief history of the pre-auth challenge, what the current issues are that they have been trying to solve, what the future looks like in terms of pre-auth, how they have re-engineered their processes over the course of the last year, the outcomes of that trial and any remaining challenges.
At January’s Payments in Hospitality SIG, a number of people said it would be great to have Oracle speak at one of our sessions, following their acquisition of Micros. We’re delighted to have Tony Hammond, Senior Solutions Director – Payments joining us to give us an update on what’s been happening as the two organisations come together and what Oracle’s Hospitality offering looks like as they look forward into the future.
